The daughter cries for Brooklyn.
- Role: setting
- In the book: The marriage, the baby and the affair all play out here: an apartment with a church across the street, a Rite Aid a block away where the colicky baby is calm under the bright lights, a later apartment on the eleventh floor. In the last sections the family leaves the city for the wife’s sister’s ramshackle house in the country, and “The daughter cries for Brooklyn.”
- Why it matters: Brooklyn is the book’s home ground, almost never described directly but always there; the move away from it is the novel’s last turn. No street or neighbourhood is ever named, so the pin is the borough.
