Riding up Alpe d’Huez, three days before we watched the Tour de France riders do the same.

  • Role: journey waypoint
  • In the article: A photo caption in a list of the author’s favourite pictures of himself: in the Alps in 2015 to watch the Tour de France, riding up the climb a few days before the race did. He calls it his proudest photo as a proper road cyclist.
  • Why it matters: Minor, a single caption; but it is the opposite of the Mostly Bikes x Me post below, which rode the famous climb only downhill.

Alpe d’Huez was just an easy bonus, since it was actually a descent from col du Sarenne, which we had to ride anyway on the way to Grenoble to catch the train home.

  • Role: journey waypoint
  • In the article: After the Col du Galibier, the route home to Grenoble goes over the col du Sarenne and down through Alpe d’Huez. The writer says they may come back one day to ride it “from the other side”.
  • Why it matters: A joke at the famous climb’s expense: ticked off downhill, on the way to a train.
