This is something I’ve experienced many times now in Alubaren, and it always leaves me stumped.

  • Role: subject
  • In the book: In “Goods and Services” (Larissa Zoot, Honduras 1993–95), a young newlywed neighbour fixes her flickering light and refuses payment, asking only for thanks. She lists other such favours from the bus driver, the seamstress, the carpenter and the mayor’s secretary, and concludes that what people in Alubaren value most is one another.
  • Why it matters: The essay’s argument is about this town’s way of exchanging help, set against her own North American habits. The town is the evidence for the whole argument.
