One of the first steps in the process was rerouting the American River.
- Role: turning point
- In the article: A tall concrete arch dam was authorised here in 1968. Crews built a cofferdam and diversion tunnel and grouted the foundation, but earthquake concerns, the Teton Dam collapse, cost and opposition halted it, and the river was returned to its channel in 2007.
- Why it matters: Without the dam the bridge would never have been built so high; its abandonment is the story’s turning point.
