Yesterday, Sandy and I went to the Zoo. The Roman spring is going to everyone’s head and it has sure done things to the animals.
- Role: setting
- In the article: In a 1953 letter Martha Gellhorn describes a zoo visit in Rome. She watches brown bears mating and notes the giraffe’s anatomy, joking about what the Romans are up to in the aphrodisiac air.
- Why it matters: The zoo is the scene for the letter’s comic take on spring, but it is one of many letters in the digest and the zoo is not named beyond ‘the Zoo’.
