One of my happiest memories of Bolinas is of how we never cooked just enough dinner for our own family, because one never knew who might be stopping by and one always wanted to be able to invite people to stay on and eat if they liked.

  • Role: setting
  • In the article: The author recalls a 1970s Bolinas childhood with extreme freedom and generosity: extra rice and soup for guests, shared cooking, baking biscuits at 4 AM. She links that culture to confusing indulgence with care.
  • Why it matters: The town’s free-spirited culture is her explanation for why she gave care freely to others but not to herself.
