I was fortunate to be sent to lovely old Bukhara to spend my term of service.
- Role: setting
- In the book: John Smart serves as a crafts-marketing adviser and high-school economics teacher. He is shown the Ark of Bukhara on his first day, goes to mosque and to weddings, and tutors the daughter of the regional mufti; the story turns on the gift of a doppa (skullcap).
- Why it matters: The city’s age and its Muslim community shape everything that happens to him; the story is about being taken in by this particular place.
