Sister Lucia worked in a small Catholic mission, based in the health center in a remote place called Cava.

  • Role: turning point
  • In the book: In August 1981 a note on a cinema ticket from Sister (Mama) Lucia summons Rosling to Cava, where some thirty women and children lie paralysed on mats. After a day of driving on sandy roads he stays, eats and prays with three Italian nuns, overcomes his fear of an unknown infection (or South African biological warfare), and launches the investigation of the epidemic later named konzo.
  • Why it matters: It is the moment Rosling the practising clinician becomes a researcher; the epidemic here sets his course for the next twenty years.
  • Real vs. fictional: Real. Text gives no district; OSM place ‘Cava’ in Memba district, Nampula matches a day’s drive and the outbreak zone 10-40 km inland from the northern coast. Tier: inferred (not documented in this text).
