On the first day I had the opportunity to go for a bike ride on the Chengdu Greenway, a brilliant cycle route that goes for 100km or so around Chengdu without crossing a road.
- Role: subject
- In the article: After an overnight flight, Dave Walker rides the Chengdu Greenway on his first day and praises its engineering, including a bridge he says would never be built in the UK. His TEDx talk is cancelled, so he goes to see giant pandas at a research and breeding centre instead.
- Why it matters: The Greenway is the place the issue is about, and it sets up the comparison with British cycling infrastructure that runs through his China newsletters (see Taiyuan).
- Real vs. fictional: The pin is the city centre; the Greenway is a ring around the city.
