I chose the C&O Canal for my route. Flat, some shade, and the unpaved surface made it easier on the body than pavement.
- Role: setting
- In the article: To mark the end of more than 20 years as a federal employee, the writer walk-runs a 26.2-mile marathon on the towpath. It is sandy, warm and quiet; she sees a heron and turtles sunning, and finishes in 6:10:42.
- Why it matters: The flat, unpaved, shaded towpath is chosen for what it does to the body, and its quiet frames her reflection on leaving the job.
