We were just entering the Chuuk Lagoon and were in serious danger of going aground.
- Role: turning point
- In the book: On the last day of Carol Severance’s voyage from Etal on the Maria Carmela, the steering chain jams as the boat enters the lagoon. Passengers and animals are passed hand to hand to clear the way, and a coconut is found wedged in the chain and removed.
- Why it matters: The jam is the voyage’s one moment of danger, and it becomes one of the tales retold afterwards. The lagoon matters as the place it happens rather than for its own character.
