On Saturdays, my father took us to Coney Island, the three of us riding the double L train to the F train to the last stop.
- Role: setting
- In the book: On Saturdays the father takes August and her brother by train to the end of the line; they watch the Wonder Wheel, the Parachute, the Cyclone and the ocean, fear the addicts and hawkers on the boardwalk, and can afford only a few rides and a hot dog.
- Why it matters: A recurring family outing that shows the family’s poverty and the father’s uncertainty, later remembered as long behind them.
