There is a point where the whole town looks like a map

  • Role: setting
  • In the book: Kathleen Coskran’s story about teaching English and algebra at Atse Dawit School in the 1960s walks the clay road to the post office, the Negussie Beit bar, Montenari’s bakery and bar, and the school, and maps the town’s class structure. It ends with the last bus climbing out of town, when the whole place can be seen like a map.
  • Why it matters: The story is a portrait of the town itself; set anywhere else it would be a different story.
