I walked out along Strandvägen, a grand residential boulevard with a boat-lined harbor on one side and imposing apartment houses on the other, out toward Djurgården, an island given entirely over to parkland in the midst of the city. It is the most wonderful place.

  • Role: setting
  • In the book: Bryson walks out along Strandvägen to Djurgården and spends half a day circling it, listing its museums, Skansen, the amusement park and the woodland views. He rates it possibly the finest park-with-attractions in Europe, and it restores his liking for Stockholm.
  • Why it matters: It turns the Stockholm chapter from irritation to admiration.
