It’s called the Fishermen’s Chapel, and it’s a Methodist chapel overlooking the Thames Estuary in Leigh-on-Sea, which is part of Southend, but also not.
- Role: subject
- In the article: The author’s own church, where he feels welcome. The main chapel is up the steps at the side, “built into the cliff above the Thames Estuary”, with a community room below and a blue cross visible from the train. The estuary weather is hard on the walls, which need major repairs; the chapel hosts a gospel choir and folk-festival events.
- Why it matters: The newsletter’s main appeal and the place the author writes about with most feeling.

This week was the start of the Leigh Art Trail in Leigh-on-Sea, and I spent a morning being an attendant at an art exhibition at The Fishermen’s Chapel.

- In the article: A diary note: he goes by train with his bike and spends a morning looking after an exhibition at the chapel during the Leigh Art Trail.
- Why it matters: Minor; it shows the chapel in use as a community space, as the earlier issue described.
