Along Getreidegasse, the site of Mozart’s birthplace
- Role: subject
- In the book: Chapter 19. Every shop has a hanging filigree sign over its door, “including, God help us, the local McDonald’s”, with the golden-arches M worked into the ironwork, as if burgers had been sold there since the Middle Ages. “I sank to my knees and beat my poor old head on the cobbled pavement.”
- Why it matters: A comic set-piece on the souvenir-shop Salzburg that Bryson finds in place of the city he remembered. It sits with the Mozartplatz as the two scenes that sour him on the old town.
