At the 2021 international climate conference in Glasgow – COP26 – the Bolsonaro government pledged to end illegal deforestation by 2028, two years earlier than previously agreed.
- Role: turning point
- In the book: Brazil’s pledge at Glasgow raised hopes that deforestation could be ended globally, since most forest loss occurs in Brazil. Within months INPE data showed 2021 deforestation at a 15-year high. Ritchie uses this to caution against taking pledges at face value.
- Why it matters: Glasgow serves as the stage for the pledge-versus-reality contrast; it is minor as a place.
