Group Home Ingleside, the facility in a converted block of studio flats in which I was living, had been left to me by my parents as somewhere that I could live out the rest of my days.
- Role: setting
- In the book: Shaka Izawa lives in a single sixteen-square-metre room at Ingleside, cared for by staff including Yamashita and Tanaka, and never leaves the building. From her west-facing window she can faintly see Mount Fuji. Here she works online, writes erotic fiction for income and arranges her plan with Tanaka. She later renames the home in memory of Anne of Ingleside, and Tanaka leaves it after the hospital episode.
- Why it matters: It is the enclosed world of the novel, where her disability, wealth and plan unfold. The name comes from Montgomery.
- Real vs. fictional: fictional home; real region inferred from text
- Where is it?: â ď¸ best-guess. Clues in the text: âFunny to think that I was born and raised in Kanagawa and yet Iâve only been to Tokyo a handful of times (apart from Machida, which doesnât really countâŚ).â; âOn clear days, the peak of Mount Fuji was faintly visible from my west-facing floor-to-ceiling windowâ; âI never once left the buildingâ; âmy decision to call the group home âInglesideâ hadnât been an ironic oneâ. Reference works: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saou\_Ichikawa (no setting information) Chosen: Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan (no specific town). The narrator says she was born and raised in Kanagawa and has seldom visited Tokyo, treating nearby Machida as ânot really Tokyoâ. Mount Fuji faintly visible from a west window fits much of Kanagawa. Alternatives: Machida area, Tokyo (adjoining Kanagawa); Elsewhere in greater Tokyo
