Recently, Sound Transit began testing light rail trains on the Homer Hadley Bridge, introducing a whole new set of engineering puzzles.

  • Role: subject
  • In the article: Neighbour of the Lacey V. Murrow bridge, named for the engineer who proposed floating bridges. In June 2025 Sound Transit tested Link light rail across it, needing insulated track blocks to stop stray currents and an innovative ‘track bridge’ with bearings to keep rails aligned as the bridge rolls, pitches and yaws. Its cables were severed in the 1990 Murrow sinking.
  • Why it matters: First test of light rail on a floating bridge, the frontier of the engineering described.
