At midday, I reached the Pass — a short, flat section of tarmac edged by snow. I was exalted. It was a pivotal moment: the highest point of my three-year round-the-world ride.
- Role: turning point
- In the book: Chapter 3 (“All Geared Up”) opens with Penn recalling his second crossing, a seven-day climb from Gilgit on a cold September day. At the top he meets Leslie, a paraplegic Scottish woman riding a hand-cranked recumbent tandem, and that meeting leads into the history of hand-driven velocipedes and the drivetrain.
- Why it matters: It is a recollection rather than part of the present-day build, but it frames the chapter. The pass links Penn’s own journey to the argument about hand power versus leg power.
