As we drove through the outskirts of Kinshasa, a city with several million inhabitants, the communities looked more and more impoverished.
- Role: journey waypoint
- In the book: Rosling, Thorkild Tylleskar and a team of about ten spend their first night in the capital before leaving by two jeeps on a two-thousand-kilometre road east to study konzo in Bandundu; equipment had been wrongly shipped to Kingston, Jamaica first. The scene straddles my range end (240000) and continues in the next chunk.
- Why it matters: Kinshasa is the starting point of the Congo fieldwork that tests the ‘infection vs cyanide’ dispute.
