What shocked me as I was making my rounds and running my hands through the various book displays was that nothing was really grabbing my attention.

  • Role: setting
  • In the article: The author and her husband visit the store the day before Christmas while visiting family. Surrounded by the displays, curated shelves, and downstairs used books, nothing grabs her and she leaves buying only a scary-story book for her child.
  • Why it matters: The bookstore is the scene where she realizes she has hit consumer overload, which launches the whole essay; another store would work but the specific disenchantment there is the hook.
