We lived in Leicester where my father was Principal of the University College., a recently founded institution supported by local philanthropists, which under his care and leadership was to grow and become the city’s University.
- Role: setting
- In the book: Describing his lifelong animal keeping, Attenborough recalls the family house beside the former municipal Lunatic Asylum that housed the college, with a greenhouse where he kept his captures and tropical fish. He bred guppies and gouramis through his schooldays.
- Why it matters: The childhood home where his animal-keeping began, a brief flashback rather than a dwelt-on setting.
