As the plane buzzed back over the mountains, it was now just us and the villagers of Maimafu. My wife, Kerry, and I were assigned to this village of 800 people in the Eastern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea.
- Role: setting
- In the book: The author and his wife are the first Volunteers in the roadless village, reached by a short flight and a trek. Shown a photo of homeless men in Chicago, the village council offers to build houses and gardens for them.
- Why it matters: The essay’s moral turning point happens here; the village’s communal life is the contrast the author reflects on.
