Twice a week after high school, I would go to the drill hall near Parliament Hill to practice map reading, bivouac, and occasionally marksmanship.
- Role: setting
- In the book: After arriving in Toronto’s suburbs in February 2000 amid deep snow, the family moved to Ottawa so Wang’s father could study. Wang grew up poor there, lacked adequate boots for the winters, ate at Subway, and joined the Royal Canadian Army Cadets.
- Why it matters: Ottawa is the author’s childhood city, where the immigrant family’s money worries and his discipline took shape.
