I had a set of notes I’d written two years earlier, in Penang, Malaysia.
- Role: backdrop
- In the book: Two years before Aosta, Penn’s rear wheel failed in Penang, and Abar, an aged Cantonese-Malayan mechanic, taught him wheel-building through pidgin, signs and drawings. They ate satay and mangosteens under the stucco arch of the shop; the notes Penn wrote there later save him in Aosta.
- Why it matters: The source of the knowledge the Aosta scene puts to work.
