I liked the company, Chris King. In fact, I liked Portland.
- Role: subject
- In the book: Chapter 2, “Drop Bars, Not Bombs”. After half a morning hunting for the unmarked Chris King Precision Components factory at the end of Nela Street, Penn tours the machine shop and collects his headset. He meets Slate Olson of Rapha for coffee on Mississippi Avenue and visits frame-builder Sacha White, and describes the city’s bike infrastructure, its tenfold rise in cyclists and the Bridge Pedal over the Willamette.
- Why it matters: Portland stands for the American cycling revival, so the steering chapter becomes a portrait of a bike city as well as of a component.
