During the dry season, I spent the evenings fishing Sierra Leone’s Rokel River with my host-country friends, the Conteh brothers-Moses, Bokarie, and Sanpha.
- Role: setting
- In the book: In ‘Fishing in Sierra Leone’, Phil Bob Hellmich fishes the Rokel for Nile perch on dry-season evenings with the Conteh brothers, loses lures on its rocky bottom, and teaches the Contehs to make their own. On his last fishing trip he sees a farmer land a perch on a Conteh lure.
- Why it matters: The river is where the lure-making project is tested and succeeds; the story’s arc runs from lost imported lures to local self-sufficiency.
