This time, it was in the Santa Cruz Mountains, and I was specifically trying to focus on writing this book. But on my leisurely hikes through the redwoods, I noticed that the light filtering through the trees was red in the afternoon.
- Role: setting
- In the book: Staying in a mountain cabin to write, the author hikes among redwoods and sees afternoon light turned red by California wildfires; on the day she leaves, fire breaks out near her parents’ house.
- Why it matters: A modern counterpart to Weiss’s Catskills cabin: retreat cannot be total because the burning world intrudes, motivating the move to ‘standing apart’.
