We got out at Sonning, and went for a walk round the village. It is the most fairy-like little nook on the whole river.
- Role: setting
- In the book: The friends get out at Sonning and walk round the village of rose-smothered cottages; the narrator recommends the Bull behind the church before they decide it is too late to pass Reading and turn back for the night.
- Why it matters: A gentle pastoral interlude; the village’s prettiness is the point.
