Having surmised that they would be attending mass at San Marco, he would hurry there and, entering the golden dusk of the sanctuary from the square’s torrid heat, locate the boy he had so missed, his head bowed at worship over a prie-dieu.

  • Role: setting
  • In the book: Aschenbach sees the basilica from the ship on arrival as the ‘fairy-tale basilica’ beside the Palace. Later he knows the Poles attend Sunday mass at San Marco, goes in, and stands at the back among kneeling worshippers watching Tadzio, then lurks outside to follow the family through the Merceria.
  • Why it matters: The sanctuary is where his watching becomes pursuit, set against the smell of the diseased city. Set elsewhere, the scene loses the sacred-profane contrast.
