Brian Rourke Cycles occupies a converted squash centre in Stoke-on-Trent.
- Role: setting
- In the book: Chapter 1, “Diamond Soul”. Penn visits Brian Rourke’s shop, a converted squash centre whose upstairs office is a shrine to road racing, and is fitted for his frame. A month later the two ride Brian’s old training ground on the moors north-east of the city, with views towards the Peak District, and Brian narrates the hills of his racing days. Then Penn watches Brian’s son Jason mitre, jig and TIG-weld the Reynolds 953 tubes into his frame in the workshop.
- Why it matters: The whole book is the building of one bicycle, and it starts here: the frame chapter, the book’s foundation, is set entirely in and around this shop.
