We are staying at a B&B in the far south of England by the sea.
- Role: setting
- In the book: The novel’s present-tense chapters are set in a damp B&B “in the far south of England by the sea”, where about ten refugees wait for their asylum claims. Nuri tends a wingless bee in the concrete courtyard under a cherry tree, sees visions of Mohammed in the garden, and walks the beach and the wooden pier with its fairground with Diomande and the Moroccan man. He is turned away from a GP surgery on a hill above the sea, and is later found in the water and taken to hospital. In the last scene Mustafa arrives at the door.
- Why it matters: It is the frame from which the whole journey is remembered, and the place where Nuri and Afra’s grief finally breaks open; the town’s anonymity matches their limbo.
- Real vs. fictional: The B&B is fictional; the town is unnamed.
- Where is it?: ⚠️ The text says only “the far south of England by the sea” and “this small town by the sea”, with a wooden pier, a fairground and arcades on the seafront, a GP surgery on a hill, and a train journey to the Home Office interview in Croydon. One web search found no reference work naming the town. In her acknowledgements Lefteri thanks a refugee for telling her his story “that day in Brighton”, and Brighton’s Palace Pier has the fairground the text describes, so the pin is Brighton. Alternatives: Hastings, Eastbourne, Bognor Regis.
