The Manor House, Woolton, Hertfordshire.
- Role: setting
- In the book: Jack gives the address to Gwendolen, and Algernon copies it on his cuff and turns up as ‘Ernest’. In the rose garden under a yew-tree, Cecily accepts him, explaining they have been engaged ‘for the last three months’; Jack arrives in mourning for his invented brother; and Cecily and Gwendolen quarrel politely over tea and cake. In the morning-room of Act Three, Lady Bracknell arrives by luggage train, Miss Prism is unmasked, and Jack turns out to be Ernest after all.
- Why it matters: The country half of the double life and the stage for both deceptions to collapse. Wilde chose a respectable Home County close to London, within easy train reach of town.
- Where is it?: ⚠️ Woolton is invented. Clues: Jack’s address is “The Manor House, Woolton, Hertfordshire”, and “the place is not in Shropshire”; Lady Bracknell speaks of “this particular part of Hertfordshire”; Algernon has “driven over from the station”, and Lady Bracknell “followed her at once by a luggage train” from London; from a nearby hill “one can see five counties”; the estate is “about fifteen hundred acres”. Wikipedia’s article on the play calls Woolton a “fictitious village” in Hertfordshire and the setting “a country house in Hertfordshire”; I found no source naming a real model. Pinned at the representative point of Hertfordshire. Not to be confused with the real Woolton in Liverpool.
