An arch with a blue sign carried the words, BAGNO AMERIGO VESPUCCI. A low green shack sunken in the sand indicated the lifeguard’s place.
- Role: setting
- In the book: The whole novel is set here over one summer. Thirteen-year-old Agostino and his widowed mother row out each morning on a pattino from their cabin on Speranza beach until the mother’s affair with a young boatman. Agostino drifts to the poor boys’ gang at the deserted Vespucci beach (lifeguard Saro, Berto, Tortima, Homs), picnics at the stream mouth ‘Rio’, hunts birds and mushrooms in the pine grove, and in the last chapter crosses the harbour quarter to the brothel on a sandy piazza on the town’s edge.
- Why it matters: The resort is never named; its mix of rich ‘Speranza’ beach, poor ‘Vespucci’ beach, pine grove, canebrake stream, shipyard harbour and brothel gives the book its social geography of class. Highlight passage evokes the Vespucci beach stand at the edge of the pine grove.
- Real vs. fictional: Fictional unnamed resort on the Tuscan (Tyrrhenian) coast. Proposed real model: Viareggio (tier: inferred, low-moderate confidence). Reference works: it.wikipedia ‘Agostino (romanzo)’: ‘Il racconto è ambientato in una località marina della costa toscana, dove madre e figlio trascorrono le vacanze estive’ and quotes Geno Pampaloni ‘durante un’estate in Versilia’ (https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agostino\_(romanzo)); libreriamo.it: ‘spiagge toscane, vere o immaginarie’, no town named (https://libreriamo.it/societa/agostino-alberto-moravia-luoghi-romanzo/); a thin summary site lists Tuscany/Versilia (bookmarkedplaces.com). No source names a town. Moravia wrote the book in a month in 1942 on Capri (translator’s note, offset 170615), not at the resort. Moravia as a boy is said to have been at Forte dei Marmi (Malaparte’s house; toscanalibri.it), and he later summered at Sabaudia (Lazio, from 1960s; libreriamo) - neither ties to the novel explicitly. Tier recommendation: inferred -> Viareggio (the only Versilia town with a canal harbour, iron/swing bridge, shipyards (caulkers), a tram and a seafront promenade of bagni backed by a pine forest, the Pineta di Levante/Ponente); alternatives: Forte dei Marmi (Moravia’s boyhood link, bagni and pineta, but no harbour canal), Marina di Pietrasanta/Lido di Camaiore, or the Pisa coast (Marina di Pisa/Tirrenia, since Agostino says he is from Pisa, but that is likely a lie/pun). Treat as ‘resort on the Versilia/Tuscan coast’, pin approximate at Viareggio.
- Where is it?: ⚠️ inferred. Clues in the text: “Cover image: Carlo Carra, Pine Tree by the Sea, 1921”; “he told Berto he was born in Pisa”; “Rio was a deserted location up the coast, a few kilometers away, where a stream flowed into the sea between the sand and a canebrake.”; “Rio was a V-shaped crevice in the dunes.”. Chosen: Viareggio. Alternatives: Forte dei Marmi – 43.9596 – 10.1699 – OSM relation 42777; Versilia (region) – documented at regional level by Pampaloni quote on it.wikipedia
