We sculled up to Walton, a rather large place for a riverside town.
- Role: journey waypoint
- In the book: The three scull up to Walton, a large town of which only a corner reaches the water. The narrator recalls Caesar’s camp, Elizabeth, Cromwell and Bradshaw, the iron scold’s bridle in the church, and the Duchess of York’s dog cemetery at Oatlands Park.
- Why it matters: A typical stop for the book’s mix of history and jokes.
