We had a lovely time last week in Whitby, walking on the coast path, catching buses to various places (inexpensive), riding on the steam railway (really quite expensive), having lovely food and drink, and visiting as many entry-fee English Heritage sites as we could (OK… two) owing to having got English Heritage membership via Tesco Clubcard.

  • Role: setting
  • In the article: Walker spends a holiday week in Whitby, walking the coast path, riding buses and the steam railway and visiting English Heritage sites; his photos show fish-and-chip crowds at dusk, and the colour of the week is ‘Whitby goth black’.
  • Why it matters: The town gives the issue its theme.
