Resvés Co-Work Space

This was an excellent co-working space. Potentially, the best that I’ve been in. It had a friendly atmosphere and was full of people with plenty of the necessary amenities like coffee, meeting rooms, booths, and large monitors for rent.

Lisbon and the Spice Race — Houtman’s Reconnaissance (1592)

In 1592 the Amsterdam merchant Reynier Pauw sent his cousin Cornelis de Houtman, with Houtman’s brother Frederick, to Lisbon, then the European terminus of the Portuguese spice trade. Whether Houtman had legitimate business there or went mainly as a commercial spy is unclear (Wikipedia). Giles Milton, Nathaniel’s Nutmeg (1999):

Exactly what Houtman discovered in Lisbon is not known, but it convinced the merchants that there was no time to be lost in entering the spice race.

What followed: Houtman led the first Dutch expedition to the East Indies, four ships leaving Amsterdam on 2 April 1595 and reaching Banten (Java) in June 1596. It was a human and commercial disaster: of 249 men, 87 returned, and Houtman’s conduct wrecked the trade at Banten. But it opened the route that became the Dutch East India Company (VOC) empire, and ended Lisbon’s century as Europe’s spice capital.
