Walks to do

Boswell’s walk to Rousseau: the Areuse, Val-de-Travers (canton of Neuchâtel)

Rebecca Solnit, Wanderlust, quoting James Boswell (1764)

When an adoring James Boswell came to visit Rousseau near Neuchâtel, Switzerland, in 1764, Boswell wrote, “To prepare myself for the great Interview, I walked out alone. I strolled pensive by the side of the River Ruse in a beautifull Wild Valley surrounded by immense Mountains, some covered with frowning rocks, others with glittering snow.”

Decoding it:

  • Where Rousseau was: MĂ´tiers, in the Val-de-Travers, where he lived 1762–65 after Emile and The Social Contract were banned; he left after his house was stoned in September 1765 (Wikipedia: MĂ´tiers). Boswell visited in December 1764 (jamesboswell.info).
  • The “River Ruse” is the Areuse, historically La Reuse, which runs down the Val-de-Travers past MĂ´tiers to Lake Neuchâtel (Wikipedia: Areuse).
  • ⚠️ In December, the “glittering snow” is plausible, but Boswell’s exact spot wasn’t identified; he was somewhere in the valley near MĂ´tiers.

The walk to do today: Gorges de l’Areuse (the river’s lower stretch, below the Val-de-Travers)

  • Noiraigue station → Boudry station, 11.5 km, about 3 h, rated easy; season April–November (MySwitzerland · Neuchâtel tourism). Train at both ends, so no car needed. Kid-friendly length.
  • To walk Boswell’s actual valley instead, walk the Areuse upstream around MĂ´tiers itself. ⚠️ No Rousseau museum or marked site in MĂ´tiers was confirmed; the town’s museums listed online are the absinthe museum and the regional museum (Maison des Mascarons).
  • Getting there from Freiburg: by train via Basel. ⚠️ Journey time not checked.
