There’s a funny detail about Cupertino that I discovered as a teenager. Growing up there in the early 2000s, there wasn’t much to do except visit one shopping center after another in what I experienced as a mind-numbing sprawl with no obvious center.
- Role: subject
- In the book: The author describes her hometown as featureless sprawl of office parks and malls; Cupertino Crossroads sat at an intersection of two six-lane roads and replaced an old crossroads with a post office, general store and blacksmith, of which no sign remained. Vallco Fashion Park, a defunct mall, is the shared bond among those who grew up there. She says she later saw it ‘all wrong’.
- Why it matters: It opens the chapter on attention: the place seemed placeless for lack of context, setting up the argument that attention reveals what is already there.
