I was pushing myself to allow time to explore this city which I guessed would be congenial because of historical associations and no Americanisation; in fact it’s a good second to Herat.
- Role: turning point
- In the book: She reaches Ghazni early, but while strolling below the old fortifications she is seized by soldiers and locked in a filthy cell for fifty minutes. An apologetic officer then lends her an army car to see the poet’s tomb on a hill at sunset.
- Why it matters: Ghazni is a comic scene of military suspicion followed by a calm sunset above orchards, and the last town before the road blocks that put her on a bus to Kabul.
