After several days’ travel, we saw far away on the western horizon what I thought must be George Giles’ estancia.
- Role: setting
- In the book: They ride west on horseback toward the Pilcomayo with an ox wagon, hunting armadillos in thorn bush and dried swamp. At a remote estancia they meet George Giles, an Englishman who has forgotten everything but one rude phrase. Attenborough is stabbed by a palm thorn here and never finds the giant armadillo.
- Why it matters: The Chaco is the expedition’s hardest country and gives the chapter its armadillo hunt and Giles anecdote.
