This is a city of absolute enchantment in the literal sense of the word. It loosens all the bonds binding the traveller to his own age and sets him free to live in a past that is vital and crude but never ugly. Herat is as old as history and as moving as a great epic poem
- Role: subject
- In the book: She arrives and describes the hotel staff, men’s dress, the bazaar, camel traffic, and the mosque with its mosaics.
- Why it matters: One of the book’s most admiring portraits of a city.

Hotel Mowafaq, the fanciest hotel in downtown Herat ($5), was just what we needed: centrally located, showers, swimming pool, clean restaurant, and free of con men and hustlers.
- Role: setting
- In the book: After the Iran–Afghanistan border, they settle into the Hotel Mowafaq, “the fanciest hotel in downtown Herat ($5)”. Herat becomes a high point: bargaining in the bazaar for clothes and a mink pelt, Rick’s first hashish, a wedding, a torchlit horse-buggy ride and bicycles around town.
- Why it matters: Rick says this is where the trip really begins.
