After a week or so at Lethem, we drove fifty miles north across the savannahs to Karanambo, to stay with one of the few Rupununi pioneers who was neither descended from, nor married to, a Melville.

  • Role: journey waypoint
  • In the book: At Karanambo, on the Rupununi River, Tiny McTurk’s thatched home with hammocks and verandas is the setting for an evening of stories, a walk to a swamp thick with roseate spoonbills and jabiru storks, and a lesson in bush tracking. Attenborough records his stories on tape.
  • Why it matters: A vividly drawn stay: the place is characterised by its pioneer host, its fishing and its waterfowl lake.
