we went to Kodiak Island off the south coast of Alaska, where the grizzly bears are reputed to be the largest in the world.
- Role: setting
- In the book: On the open gravel flats around the estuaries, Attenborough walks behind Jeff Turner, who knows the bears individually. Speaking to camera with his back to a female bear, he hears her plunge into the stream and rise with a salmon.
- Why it matters: Source of the grizzly two-shot; dwelt on for danger and perfect timing.
