Many miles away, near the head of the Ningam River, he prepared an emergency hideout.
- Role: turning point
- In the book: While wintering with the exiles, Joe Mack prepares a concealed lair under fallen spruce near the head of the Ningam, with fuel stacked and a way in and out. When he has to flee the village he heads there, and a search helicopter finds him less than five miles off; he kills its crew with arrows and it crashes into the mountainside. He hides under cover for three days while planes search, then follows the Ningam into the Gonam. Later Alekhin puts “a thick finger on a mountainside near the head of the Ningam” and, from two arrowheads sifted out of the burned earth, works out what happened.
- Why it matters: The downed helicopter is the point where the hunt escalates: it tells Alekhin his quarry is alive and armed, and sets the trail he follows for the rest of the chase.
