Platz der Alten Synagoge
Square on the western edge of Freiburg’s old town, by the university buildings and a tram stop. It shows up as the start and end point of a city-centre demonstration that VAG’s control centre plans its tram diversions around.

Time for a change of location: with traffic supervisor Matthias, we head into the city centre in the E6, the red VAG response vehicle, to Platz der Alten Synagoge. This too is part of every demonstration: direct coordination with the police.
- Role: setting
- In the article: A behind-the-scenes day with VAG’s traffic supervisors on the Saturday after May Day. The “Global Marijuana March” is announced to run from Platz der Alten Synagoge via Belfortstraße, Bismarckallee, Friedrichring and Kaiser-Joseph-Straße back to the square, and the control centre considers cutting line 3 at Europaplatz. At the square, Matthias meets the police operations commander and finds perhaps 30 marchers instead of 300; the group is allowed to walk beside the tracks with no closures for VAG, and the trams pass it on the Kajo.
- Why it matters: The square is where the day’s plan is decided: the small turnout seen there means none of the prepared diversions are needed. It’s the article’s one outdoor scene; the rest happens at the control-centre monitors.
